The Fourth of July found us in Cape Cod visiting friends and escaping the South Carolina heat. Oh, did I have plans…friends, sailing, lobster, tennis…
It was perfect. A little windy, but perfect.
As we all know, any trip with kids will introduce you to the unexpected, and this trip didn’t fail us. Sure, we’re expecting the friends and beach and lobster and boats and sunshine and wine and walks and hey, what else is there?
Bass. Uh huh. Bass.
Sure, there was a little pond by the house, but who knew?
Snuggled in bed at 5:45AM, I’d get the poke. Standing there is a fully dressed bright eyed kid, “Hey, mom, c’mon, lets go fishing”…
A lot was asked of the little rod/reel set that was nothing but an afterthought on the trip up, and it made the all the difference for a little guy whose job was to just come along on a family trip. This became his trip — so much so that he was teary when we left. There were more big bass in the pond by the house…
It’s a great idea to pack a little rod for exactly this sort of thing if you’re going on a road trip with kids. These little rods are inexpensive (between $9 and $16) and you can pick them up in most sporting goods stores.
The one I found is called the Zebco Dock Demon Deluxe and it cost around $16 — and it was worth every penny for this little 3 to 4 foot rod. It was easy to manage in the trunk of a loaded car (about the length of a tennis racquet) , and it gave him unexpected freedom on our trip — and me as well.
And yes, I pulled him away from the pond for a moment. And it was perfect.
