Here’s the next event we’re planning for….the 21st annual fly in! If you like eating outdoors, sitting on hay bales listening to great stories, and good camaraderie, then this event is exactly what the doctor ordered. Every year on New Years day, we host our annual fly in. Here’s how it started.
When my brother took up flying, he didn’t just kinda get into it. He lived it — and today, only 25 or so years later, he continues to thrive in the private pilot world. In doing so, he has introduced our entire family to a culture of spirited, loyal, committed fly-boys and gals so diverse and wonderful that, well, central casting would pay ga-zillions to find characters this great.
We’re gearing up for pilots from all over to fly their planes in to our farm for an afternoon of Boston Butt (cooking since 3AM that day), lots of stories (fishermen have met their match with stories this good!), nosing around each others’ planes, an acrobatic move or two, and plenty of camaraderie. The best part, is that us non-pilots are lucky enough to be included. Last year’s Fly In was a huge success — despite being postponed for weather and threats of more bad weather (thank goodness, just a little overcast). We had over 20 airplanes of every shape, size and ilk along with a few helicopters — no Ultralights or skydivers last year.
The pictures tell the story — I just wish I had more. I was kinda too busy enjoying boston butt….
Our kids think this entire event is for them. Especially if we allow them to stand far behind a plane as it’s about to take off. The thrust of air is enough to get a big plane off the ground — and to have a kid lean into the wind …
This little Norwich Terrier had more air hours than most of us will ever have in our lifetimes! Yes, she was spoken for (whew). And yes, her name was Amelia.
The blessing. All 200 plus folks hold hands for grace before lunch.
As the last planes flew out, we said a prayer of thanks. For our great friends, a spectacular day, and a safe 20th year (!). Now this week….21st annual fly in! Pics to come.
Onwards and upwards — Happy New Year!
